UPDATE: In the initial announcement for OSP 2013, I mentioned that those of you who come to North Park via Pearce Mill Road would need to take a detour since the road is closed for construction. Well, I’m afraid the detour just got a lot worse: on my way out this morning, I found out that they’ve closed off the entire intersection around Pearce Mill Road.

To take their “detour,” you have to turn around, head up 19 North toward Cranberry, and turn right near the Exxon station. Frankly, I don’t think it’s worth the trouble. I strongly recommend finding an alternate route.

Revision as of 03:03, 26 July 2013

It's that time of year again! WPLUG's 12th annual Open Source Picnic will take place in North Park on August 10, 2013 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. In the spirit of open source collaboration, we invite everyone to help make our picnic a success by bringing food, inviting people, and organizing activities for the day. Bring your friends! Invite the whole family!

(That's our only rule for the day, incidentally: everything must be family-friendly. No booze; nothing scandalous.)

The more people participate, the more successful we'll be. If you'd like to pitch in, add your name to one of the lists below. Be sure to RSVP for your entire party (including guests) at Eventbrite. You need to do this even if you've signed up below.

Setup

Hanging signs, setting up pic-a-nic tables, and chasing away pesky critters. Please show up at 12:30.

Cleanup

Food/Drinks

Try to be considerate of people with food allegies (listed below). If you pack something that somebody can't eat, tossing in something extra for them would be very nice!

  • WPLUG will provide some basic "picnic staples" - burgers, hot dogs, buns, soft drinks, etc. What we bring will be keyed off of the responses to the Eventbrite invitation - so please do respond to the invitation to make sure we have enough!

Food Allergies

If you're planning to attend, please list your food allergies here and rate them according to severity:

  • Mild (minor effects; may be okay in small quantities)
  • Moderate (noticeable effects)
  • Severe (life-threatening).

We cannot guarantee that people bringing food will accommodate your dietary restrictions. If it looks like your choices will be limited, pack something for yourself - or better yet, bring enough for everyone so we can try something new!

Supplies

Sports/Games/Activities

  • Justin Smith: OpenStreetMap mapping expedition (maybe). Take a walk around the park and do something good!
  • Justin Smith: Go Ape, a company that operates treetop adventure courses, has set up shop in North Park around the tennis courts. Is anybody brave enough to try it with me? Let me know and I'll try to make reservations.
  • Card games - poker? (With chips instead of money, of course)

Venue Information

The picnic will take place at Kolich Pavilion in North Park.

If you usually come from 910, Pearce Mill Road is closed for construction. Keep going past the intersection where you'd typically turn and follow the detour signs.

The shelter is on Lake Shore Drive - actually, it is just one shelter before the Lakeshore shelter where we were last year. As you are traveling on Lake Shore Drive from Walter Road, you pass a number of shelters, and you eventually come to the Kolich shelter, and then the Lakeshore shelter is the very next one. So, if you reach Lakeshore shelter, you've gone too far (and can't actually turn around, because Lake Shore Drive is one way at that point, so you have to go around the whole loop all over again.

If you end up having trouble finding the pavilion, call the WPLUG hotline at (412) 254-6583 for directions. Just be prepared for an introduction to OpenStreetMap once you arrive... ;)

Ridesharing

If you need a ride to the park or can provide one, post in this area.
