Minutes

The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Western Pennsylvania Linux Users Group was held on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at 6:05 PM, at Coffee Tree Roasters in Shadyside. The regular presiding officer was in the Chair and the Secretary was present. The minutes of the June 5, 2012 meeting were approved as read.

The Chair reported that currently there is no shelter secured for the August picnic. As such, the board should work together on making this happen. The chair may put out an email to the WPLUG mailing list asking if anybody has any suggestions or ideas on budget-friendly options. Currently North Park looks like the best option, but it would be a good idea to explore other options.

The Chair also reported that Vance Kochenderfer is secured to give a talk about Advanced SSH for the upcoming general user meeting this month.

The Chair then talked about the upcoming Software Freedom Day. A good location for WPLUG to have a presence for this event would be great. The Pittsburgh Public Market worked well last year, but it would be good to explore other options with decent foot traffic. Perhaps in front of the Carnegie Library would work (pending on the need for a permit), or else it's possible WPLUG can secure a kiosk at a mall such as the Monroeville Mall.

The Chair then mentioned that so far there is no speaker for the upcoming October meeting. The Treasurer suggested that if a speaker is not secured, that perhaps the group should consider doing something like lightning talks instead as an alternative.

The Chair then concluded his report just as Brian Seklecki arrived to discuss the Wilkins School Networking job.

It was discussed that Brian and Tom need to sign a waiver and present Patty Doody a statement of work. She has a board to report to also, so providing her with all necessary information is essential. There is no timeline for the job, so doing it in the fall is the plan for now. Once it starts, it would be great to post pictures and progress reports on the WPLUG website. Brian has verbally agreed that the cost to WPLUG is exactly zero dollars. Getting liability waivers completed and signed are first steps along with the statement of work. Once this happens, much more significant progress can be made.

The Vice Chair had nothing to report.

The Secretary reported that currently there are 18 members. Also there was then some talk about looking into online membership packages for the WPLUG site, but so far only a custom solution seems like it will work.

The Treasurer reported that the current bank balance is $859.65. This includes the $40.00 in dues deposits, and the reimbursement to himself of $19.75.

The Treasurer also mentioned that he will attend an event on Thursday, July 12th on the behalf of WPLUG. The event is the Pittsburgh Technology Council's "Summer Slam IX", and it is taking place at Hofbräuhaus, and will run from 5 PM until 8 PM. After talking with the organizers, the Treasurer was told that there is no cost to WPLUG, and that WPLUG will be mentioned in any promotional mailings. It is basically a mingling and meet and greet type of event. It is free to attend, but does require an RSVP.

The Internet Committee reported that filtering on the WPLUG mailing lists was implemented to stop sites like Facebook from spamming the lists when somebody shares their email contact list with the site.

The Event Committee reported that a speaker is needed for October. If a speaker is not found, then potentially a variety of lightning talks could be given instead as mentioned previously. If that is to happen though, people will need to pre-register, and there will need to be a firm registration date cut-off.

The Investigating Committee has nothing to report.

The Newsletter Committee has nothing to report.

The Public Relations committee reports that the July 14th meeting will soon be advertised once there are more concrete details from the speaker, Vance Kochenderfer. One way to promote this will be through the Pittsburgh Linux Meet-up, and hopefully it will bring in some new people as compared to the regular promotion methods.

The Wilkins School Networking Committee report is covered in the discussion with Brian Seklecki above.

There are no Special Orders.

There is no Unfinished Business to discuss.

The meeting adjourned at 7:32 PM.
