Beth Lynn Eicher - bethlynn Vance Kochenderfer - happylemur David Kraus - currlynoodle Ted Rodgers - tdr Brian Seklecki - lavalamp Michael Semcheski and Mike Hansell were not present * Now talking in #wplug * Topic is 'Meet The Candidates HERE - 10/17/2007 @ 8pm - The Western Pennsylvania Linux Users Group - http://www.wplug.org/ - Next Meeting: MythTV (and Elections) Saturday, October 20th, 10am CMU NSH 1507' * Set by pridkett on Wed Oct 17 11:25:30 hi hello hi, curlynoodle hrm, so this is meet the candidates? hi ted, i'm ted ... how you doing ted. good, ted, and you? fine thanks. we should have a someone guide this chat who isn't running for the board Hi Ted! Is anyone here a QuickBooks user? * happylemur_ has joined #wplug Welcome Vance my mom is a quickbooks master Howdy sup loko, i admin'd it, never used it much * Arenlor has joined #wplug loko: used QB at a former employer, what's your question? <--- used to run a 10 node quickbooks "mess" thats a mess alright heres my issue my bank account is 82 cents short loko, sue your bank its short in quickbooks not real life hell, sue Ted I can't create a deposit for 82 cents to balance it, as that throws off all my reports by 82 cents i'll pay it off in a penny a week lol loko, if you're using pro, call intuit Can0beans: do you want to lead this irc meeting? so I'm just going to observe ok i do not know if the other two canidates are coming well i'm not stripping alone :) tdr I don't think my support is valid with them - this is 2005 does anybody know how to get in touch with Micheal? bethlynn: I'll shoot him an email Is Patrick active? He'd seem to be the natural choice to lead. happylemur: ok. I'll give him call i tried to call but my phone is crapping out lavalamp is actually here i'm here Hello sir * lavalamp drops in * lavalamp reads his unread WPLUG mail well patrick didn't answer * wm_eddie gets no email at work... it's depressing. * tdr slips diethyl ether into CF's A/C air intake then I remember how much I hate reading/replying to email. Then it's ok again. I'll start the candidate talk by offering some leadership background. In college, my roommate and I attempted to start a ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) group. Unfortunately, due to lack interest the group fizzled within a year. Well, I guess if anyone has any election-related questions, they can ask away. Yes, please do. curlynoodle: apathy is the disease of our generation =/ Oh, this is Dave Kraus BTW * Jason_F has quit IRC (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)) also, the iPod Very true oh right, this Brian A. Seklecki * lavalamp grins all smiley-glad-hands >:} I'm called ted rodgers lavalamp: did you get you camera? who cares about apathy anymore Vance Kochenderfer here. curlynoodle: yea who was that chick at your party? Which of you will kiss my baby? lavalamp: huh? Can0beans: I will when she's born ok good enough bethlynn++ :) I don't think you want everybody kissing your wife's tummy * happylemur__ has joined #wplug ya, that would probably make her uncomfortable that would be a different type of meeting Candidates, if elected you will have chance to change things within WPLUG. Given that chance what is the one thing you would change in your year that you would really consider a WIN for WPLUG? I think vance is having trouble with his dialup. happylemur keeps joining this channel * Freshy_the_O has joined #wplug Yes, but I won't waste my one thing I can change by wishing for better connectivity. :) happylemur, aol would be happy to sign you up :) It's a line problem, unfortunately I can't fire Verizon. Can0beans: regardless of the outcome of the election, I feel passionately about getting more creative with events. as a program committee member, I will work for at least 3 dinner time weeknight meetings and one large attendance / minicon meeting a year The thing I would most like to change would be to increase participation in planning/pulling off WPLUG events. We need more than just the same old folks to help out. Vance, how do you think that can be done? A: I would advocate for/engage in a year-long public relations blitz and public awareness campaign ( utilizing my existing relations with the regional IT community ) This not only makes events fresher and more interesting, but increases their ties with WPLUG. Can0beans, i think we need to focus on getting new faces involved, people who will be active and contribute to wplug --giving back to help the organization grow and gain awareness. * wm_eddie wouldn't mind helping put flyers etc. on Pitt campus. wm_eddie: that would be great! we need a campus rep * Arenlor is from Geneva in Beaver Falls I hate the linux groups here anyway. They are those "we are l33t gamerz" types. * happylemur has quit IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) curlynoodle: what would you change? Can0beans: that is the difficult part. We have put out calls for help and had some great volunteers step up. One approach is to see where we can make participation easier (e.g., the wiki does this for internet stuff). sorry, was distracted for a moment. np I'd like to organize meetings on weekday evenings. That would definitely be better for me. What do you all think WPLUG does best? Can0beans: wplug has a will to survive wplug provides an avenue to find answers that refute the FUD and provide more balanced facts about things are possible to do with linux/opensource I definately feel WPLUG offers a friendly place for everyone, regardless of experience and education. WPLUG serves as a core component of the F/OSS process, acting as a regional (SW PA) clearninghouse for all things F/OSS related, and as rudamentory as it seems, the organizational presence, the mailing list, the Wiki, and the periodic events are exhibits of success. ~BAS Can0beans: bethlynn is right, being a stable presence is a real strength. Referring to wm_eddie's comment, WPLUG also offers a congenial atmosphere. Too bad there aren't any Ubuntu Release Parties in Japan :-( My last question, what does WPLUG suck at? wm_eddie, you want there to be one? (oh and anyone who wants to join the WPLUG planet just /msg me your feed address) Arenlor: I feel really proud of this release, and I wouldn't mind getting a few drinks tonight. Can0Beans: WPLUG needs help with logistics and planning. Something most volunteer groups struggle with. wm_eddie you could gather a few friends together, pop its location onto the ubuntuforums and then go party like it's April of 08 wm_eddie: don't think you've ever met him, but Greg Simkins has gone over to Sapporo for an extended gig. wplug's website sucks wplug is sometimes too wrapped up in planning tho, too.. None of my friends use Ubuntu though. * happylemur_ has quit IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) * wm_eddie was about to say the website is what sucks about wplug * snkmchnb has quit IRC ("Leaving") * snkmchnb has joined #wplug wm_eddie convert them to Ubuntu with a party the website is much better then some websites. At least it is not hot pink. Can0beans: suck is a relative term, but although it's improving, I think the board still has difficulty delegating work. i have to go catch a 9:30 bus god speed you all and god save OpenBSD i think sometimes it becomes hard to transition the planning in actions, so idea get kicked around endlessly until they are almost forgotten. I pledge to stop being negative about ideas for wplug from others. In that regard I suck but I don't want to be that way anymore. lavalamp, all except that one guy, what's his name, that isn't real pleasant? Theo yep i want him to take me * eksortso has joined #wplug lavalamp: sorry, I think theo's married ! Hi Dave lavalamp, i want to feed him a 64 point font printout of the linux kernel source Hi Vance hey Vance evening oh, wrong Dave Dave's not here, man. lol I'm Dave O. Welcome Dave0 hey Dave i heard you needed a moderator? eksortso: chris has been keeping this alive by asking us questions. to quickly summarize, what's could change about wplug? what's good about wplug? good so far and what sucks about wplug? is anyone logging this? One thing that's bad about it is that it took me a good bit of time to find it all my chats are logged Arenlor: are you subscribed to the wplug list? Can you post the log when we are done? sure, just signed up for it a bit ago excellent. thank you I will ask a question about events since things have died off a bit wait a sec... who's online right now? sound off Dave Kraus ted * Can0beans sounds off Jason Vance Can0beans: You're Chris * wm_eddie is half lurking because he's at work. correct Beth Lynn Eicher Beth Lynn Eicher is now my friend! I love you too monkeybot good thing monkeybot can't vote! ;) monkeybot: vote? sends his email to evand saying that he'd like to have a non email based voting system. Do we want to have an installfest on 11/10 or 11/17 sadly I can't attend either * ssweeny has joined #wplug Installfest 11/10 11/17 is the weekend before thanksgiving. Freshy has a good point. yeah, 11/10 would be better I'm planning a pasta dish for the Saturday meeting, let's have a quick vote: Meat or Veggie? i'm for meat, though i can enjoy both tdr: did you get that? I'm sorry, we're going to have to switch the venue booking agai. bethlynn, you guys just know how much i like to use ocal bethlynn: can I drag you into #ubuntu-pennsylvania for a moment? we're planning our gutsy release party, wplug has been mentioned pleia2: we're in the middle of a debate, of sorts. i don't mean to be rude. i do want to hear what you want to say, just not immediately. curlynoodle: doesn't matter to me. I must wrap up for the evening. Any more election related questions for me? I have a question for the canidates: bethlynn: go ahead what one community must we strive to improve relations? ie bsd-users, new linux users, other ugs, etc pick the one you find most important or suggest something I didn't list I feel that outreach to new users is most important since no one is born with linux knowelege I'd say new Linux users ..Too I'm with Beth. I'm not running, but I'd say: small businesses. Get Linux onto desktops. And Dave! New users. bethlynn: WPLUG caters very well to technical types. I'd like us to better connect with non-technical people, not just new users, but also business people to show how Open Source can work for them. I know several Microsoft professionals, and work with a few too, that have interest but don't fully appreciate the benefits of FOSS I think that would depends on what we see as a focus or mission: whether we want to be more into raising opensource awareness and bringing in new users or if we want to broaden our ties with existing users/communities. i'd say both are important. we could grow in numbers easier by recruiting newbs, but stonger ties to other *nix users/groups would really benefit us too and let us join forces with already-active people. the m$ professionals I know pretend to be interested when convenient, but underneath act like opensource is a vermin that is destined to be crushed by redmond cash. Sorry all, I'm overrun. See everyone on Saturday. bye curlynoodle! curlynoodle: see ya curlynoodle: take care * curlynoodle has left #wplug bye dae er dave * curlynoodle has joined #wplug one more question this should be quick * curlynoodle has left #wplug what one world describes wplug? s/world/word bethlynn: that's a tall order i can't answer that ok. I'll start it out I think monkeybot might have the answer for that... maybe. potential monkeybot: WPLUG WPLUG is the Western Pennsylvania Linux Users' Group or techsupport for everything non-MS. hmm yeah, he didn't help potential is a good word. techsupport Lets help add "fun" to that list. i was going to say "fun" but i've already embarrassed myself too much bethlynn: "community" is my best thought. tdr: if you don't pick a word I will give you one i'm thinking splunge? portal or gateway potentially fun techsupport community? potentially fun techsupport community gateway with beer potentially fun techsupport community gateway with splunge I'd go With beer sounds much better than with splunge. depends on the beer, sometimes it could be interchangeable beer is good. But I'm trying to be all-inclusive (and failing at it). i'd personally love a British pale ale called Splunge free follow up... that one word... why did each of you choose it? why not? why not is just a question portal because it can lead lots of places Freshy_the_O: free beer? :) "Free" is your one word, i take it. tdr: i can vouch for that, on many levels eksortso: because WPLUG offers a place for people to connect with one another. * Nockian has joined #wplug because wplug offers up services for free that anyone can use. happylemur__: you're referring to "portal"? eksortso: I'm referring to "community." Freshy_the_O: that's true, to some extent happylemur__: oh yeah. I forgot you answered that! That's true. bethlynn: why "potential"? wm_eddie: you said "fun," and you coaxed monkeybot into saying "techsupport." Anyone want to comment? we are now 10 years old there is still plenty of room for growth and evolution linux is bigger than ever but we are in an era where ugs are dwindling and others of other OS's are getting more and more frustrated Linux is all grown up now and getting sued for patent infringement. Oh how time flies. there is plenty of opportunity for users who come to us looking for an alternative will we be ready ? wm_eddie, that just says fools will always lie in order to hurt those who aren't screwing other people over the potential is there but will we perform? and Unix is the old parent who the kids are fighting for custody of Arenlor, the fights over on that front. tdr: They are just people using stupid US patent law to their advantage. I think our government is the one more at fault here. True, but you know some other person is going to try to claim it Are we done talking about the election issues? bethlynn: very true, a lot to think about wm_eddie, justice should sometimes just not be so blind and choose to see the same scum abuses the system continuously do we have a motion to close this session?
