Revision as of 23:04, 26 February 2007
There are lots of tasks that may seem relatively simple in Windows, but may be a bit more difficult to do in Linux. This page presents a variety of these tasks, and the best ways to solve them using tools in Linux. Wherever possible, we'll try to notate when a solution is presented using Free software, and when a solution requires the use of proprietary software in Linux.
If you have other ideas, feel free to add them to this table, if you're not comfortable editing the HTML in this table, then add them to the list at the end of this page called I'd like to see how to do that!.
If you can answer an issue, please sign up below under I'd like to demonstrate how to do that! with the details.

Rip a DVD | Ripping video DVDs implies breaking of the CSS copy protection/encryption present on the disc. Although this system is very weak, it is a violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act to do so. As such, while it's easy to take a DVD and use a decrypter to copy the DVD, and even then later take the DVD image and shrink it to fit on a cheap 4.7GB disk, we can't tell you how to do it. But, we're sure Google could. | |

Switch users without logging out |
I'd like to see how to do that!
Add your questions to this list!
- How do I listen to Sirius Internet radio on Linux. I have a valid account, but the page tries to load an ActiveX Windows Media object. Also, I could use some insight into how to set up MPlayer better. Mhs 12:35, 25 February 2007 (EST)
- How can I allow multiple people to login graphically to the same machine at one time? I think the Linux Terminal Server Project might cover this, but I'm not sure. I like VNC, but it doesn't really allow for concurrent independent users. Mhs 12:37, 25 February 2007 (EST)
- LTSP is a little different than what you're looking for. I'll try to show off a few different solutions for this. Most of them deal with allowing for remote X access. Although, there are some companies that sell nifty multi-user installation environments for things like Fedora. Pwagstro 12:26, 26 February 2007 (EST)
I'd like to demonstrate how to do that!
If you are willing to do a demo, please sign up below in the following format:
- Task (the more specific, the better)
- Your name
- Name of software you'll be using
- About how long you think you'll need to present
- Produce a newsletter
- Vance Kochenderfer
- OpenOffice.org Writer
- 10 min.
- Create a brochure
- Vance Kochenderfer
- Scribus
- 15 min.
Thank you!
