WPLUG Goals
At the October 30, 2006 meeting the WPLUG board established a set of five, three and one year goals. We then pared each of these sets of goals to about five different concrete and actionable items. The goal of this plan is that the one year tasks always lead us in the direction of the three year tasks, which are the foundation for the five year tasks. The one year plan should be revisited as needed during the year, with the three and five year plan revisited annually.

Five Year Goals
* Tangible benefits for members
* Medium/Large scale Pittsburgh based Linux conference
* Training to the point of formal certification (see what's going on with the FreeBSD community)
* Strong SIGs that meet monthly
* Better WPLUG reputation -- local, national level -- with other lugs, oss in general, goverments
* Incorporate as a 501(c)(3)

Three Year Goals
* Regional conference on a yearly basis
* OS Desktop training sessions -- PrePrint workflow, photo workflow, etc. More of a classroom instruction session see about working with ProTech or something
* Tiered membership program
** associate, student, professional, etc
** provides infrastructure for tangible benefits
* Incorporate with the state
* Crossover membership with other PGH technology organizations
** In a regional sense -- connect with other Linux/BSD/Free Software Groups
** Ohio, WVULug, CPlug, BPLUG, PSLUG
** regional alliances
** (aka getting in touch with other organizations that serve a similar purpose)

One Year Goals
* getting committees functioning
** start with individual people
** put people on the committee that are active and willing to do the tasks within the scope
** make them feel empowered
** have committees go through the same exercise we're doing here
*** 1 year, 6 mon, 3 mon plans
** board member on each committee to oversee, but not do the work
** reduce barrier to entry on committees
* Tax ID number
* Meeting schedule defined and published 2-3 months out - resolve meeting places
* LUGRadio Live USA
* Fix the online community
** retire penguin
** install a real CMS
*** openACS is not a long term solution
*** maybe just stick with MediaWiki
** redirect wplug.org to wplug.ece.cmu.edu
** install jabber server for wplug (wildfire is a good option)
** find some network admins
** set specific times on IRC for questions/help rather than idlefest
** select a software platform
** contest for new WPLUG logo or layout
Wmoran//www.wplug.org/wiki/WPLUGBoard/Meeting-20070910WPLUGBoard/Meeting-200709102007-09-24T04:03:34Z
Wmoran: Add minutes

## Chair - Patrick Wagstrom
### It's very important to get the board to meetings on time, it was upsetting that some people were late to the business meeting at the GUM. It was good that everyone had their reports ready and the meeting went quickly.
### Patrick to investigate getting a key to the CMU rooms, in case Ted runs in to difficulty. As long as there's someone associated with SCS, we should be able to use the rooms in Newell-Simon.
### South Hills Giant Eagle may have a usable venue if needed.
### Jared (PTC) is open to allowing us to meet at PTC facilities in case of an emergency.
### The board should actively foster relationships that allow us access to other venues in the event CMU is unavailable.
### We have a nice pool of nominees for the board.
### There will be a cake at OLF during the pre-party on Friday, Sept 28. We need to approve money for the October meeting for cake, etc.
### Mike S. understands our reservations to slicehost. Vance will register a Linode account and Mike will write a reimbursement check. We previously voted to spend $300/year and the $20/month plan looks good.
## Vice Chari - Vance Kochenderfer
### Executrain may offer a training discount for WPLUG employees, but Vance has not heard back despite contacting them.
### Vance will soon be getting a quote for business cards.
## Secretary - Bill Moran
### It's OK to give a 30-day grace period for folks who want to renew but can't get money until the next meeting.
### PO box has been renewed
### Ballots for the election need to be sent out
## Treasurer - Mike Hansell
### $60 in dues collected
### Account balance: $506.89
## Member at large - Beth Eicher
### Pittsburgh Perl workshop is having difficulty. It would be nice to promote the event for them. They are also looking for volunteer help for the October 13/14 event
### SNAPgh has indefinitely lost their venue
# Committee Reports
## Program
### Each board member should analyze how the programming went last year. We have stuck to meeting dates, does it matter? Was the quality of the speakers good enough? Was it wise to scale back to only 1 meeting per month and one installfest every 3 months? Please write up your opinions and bring them to the next meeting.
### There are two leads for the October meeting, if neither work, Patrick will give a talk either on Python or MythTV. It would be good to have the new board plan the December meeting.
### The November installfest is shortly after the new board takes over. Ideas for theme? Fedorafest? Gentoofest?
### Most committees are actually run by the board. It'd be good for the new board to actively recruit committee members.
### About 15 people have signed up for the mailing list for the activities fair.
### Greg Simkins got a quote on a WPLUG poster.
### Bryan Smith signed up to help Ted with LPI work.
### Vance bought 2 mugs and a tote bag from Cafe Press. Please bring to next meeting.
## PR
### The activities fair is probably worth doing again
### Software Freedom Day looks good. Need 20 or 30 CD cases or sleeves.
## Internet
### We're buying them a virtual server
## Investigating
### The complaint has been rectified (found to be without cause).
## Newsletter
### Never heard back from Bobbie on books, apparently she's interested
### ErieLUG is alive and kicking
### Software Freedom Day looks good, we think what we're doing is legal.
### Greg Simkins needs to fill out a form for what he wants for the sign so we can approve it.
## Chair
### Weirdness with summer slam: We were only listed on some invites. A small group of WPLUGers showed up. Vance sent Jared a thank-you. This seems a good event for WPLUG to attend. Distinctive clothing is more or less mandatory (otherwise we just blend in). Seems wise to have a strategy for next year, since evangelism and job hunting seem contradictory to each other. It may be possible to put up a table for next year. A Summer Slam wiki page might be worthwhile.
## Vice-Chair
### One query regarding Erie LUG was passed on to Bill/John. Another regarding Linux/PPC was referred to the mailing list/installfest.
## Secretary
### 35 Members in good standing at this time
### Will be sending out messages to all members regarding renewal dates
## Treasurer
### Have received information from Beth.
### Now have official letter of cancellation from Paypal
### Tracking accounts by paper at this time
### Mike is well-prepared to hand over paperwork to new treasurer
### Need to renew PO box soon
### $531.98 in bank account
### Beth/Mike/Bill signed bank signature card
### Account will continue to require only 1 signature on checks
## Member at large
### Accepted new member at last GUM.
### Gave PO box key to Mike
# Committee reports
## Program
### Last month's event went well with 18 attendees
### Host should always formally thank the speaker. We should send thank-you letters (may still have some -- look for them at installfest.
### Picnic
#### Lack of signing-upness on the wiki.
#### Beth is leaving early (5:30) so someone else needs to take care of cleanup -- Vance volunteers.
#### Have nothing to grill and nobody has volunteered to grill
#### Bill to send out picnic reminders
#### Would be beneficial for everyone to contact someone personally
### Installfest
#### Coding dojo is a go
#### Confirmed room 1507
#### Patrick may make it
#### We have lots of Ubuntu CDs
#### Beth will demo Ubuntu install. RSVP to Beth if you're coming.
#### Beth verified the 10:00 - 5:00 PM time is correct
### No topic for Sept meeting yet
### Need to start sending out emails pimping OLF and other events. This year is WPLUG's 10th anniversary. We should have a cake or something.
### We should organize our stuff into event-specific boxes
### Ted Rogers is interested in doing a crash course for the LPI exam
### "Pittsburgh Linux Fest" -- we can get $4000 from Pitt if we form a "club". First get the stuff in place at Pitt, then can move forward. Timed for next spring.
## PR
### Advertisements with Pitt news: We seem to feel the benefit is not worth the cost.
### City paper may be willing to give us a free plug. Mike to investigate.
### We need new business cards: Vance to investigate.
### Activities fair at Pitt is coming up in Sept. Good place to set up a table.
### Software Freedom Day. Vance has created a flier. No organized plans yet. Dave Kraus has been working with the SFD international peole.
### T-Shirts successfully distributed.
### Survey is "hanging around"
## Internet
### Slicehost is a 2-man firm and did not return Beth's calls. The snapshot feature is the only advantage of slicehost. Beth will speak with Mike S. regarding these concerns.
## Investigating
### Nothing has been heard regarding the recent incident.
## Newsletter
### July issue is ready. Material requested for next month.
### Kiddix: Vance pursuing inteview
## ErieLUG
### URL has been transferred to ErieLUG.org

* Tangible benefits for members
* Medium/Large scale Pittsburgh based Linux conference
* Training to the point of formal certification (see what's going on with the FreeBSD community)
* Strong SIGs that meet monthly
* Better WPLUG reputation -- local, national level -- with other lugs, oss in general, goverments
* Incorporate as a 501(c)(3)

Three Year Goals
* Regional conference on a yearly basis
* OS Desktop training sessions -- PrePrint workflow, photo workflow, etc. More of a classroom instruction session see about working with ProTech or something
* Tiered membership program
** associate, student, professional, etc
** provides infrastructure for tangible benefits
* Incorporate with the state
* Crossover membership with other PGH technology organizations
** In a regional sense -- connect with other Linux/BSD/Free Software Groups
** Ohio, WVULug, CPlug, BPLUG, PSLUG
** regional alliances
** (aka getting in touch with other organizations that serve a similar purpose)

One Year Goals
* getting committees functioning
* Tax ID number
* Meeting schedule defined and published 2-3 months out - resolve meeting places
* LUGRadio Live USA
* Fix the online community
** retire penguin
** install a real CMS
*** openACS is not a long term solution
*** maybe just stick with MediaWiki
** redirect wplug.org to wplug.ece.cmu.edu
** install jabber server for wplug (wildfire is a good option)
** find some network admins
** set specific times on IRC for questions/help rather than idlefest
** select a software platform
** contest for new WPLUG logo or layout
Wmoran//www.wplug.org/wiki/Meeting-20070811Meeting-200708112007-08-10T20:37:09Z
Wmoran: Add my name to setup

* Tangible benefits for members
* Medium/Large scale Pittsburgh based Linux conference
* Training to the point of formal certification (see what's going on with the FreeBSD community)
* Strong SIGs that meet monthly
* Better WPLUG reputation -- local, national level -- with other lugs, oss in general, goverments
* Incorporate as a 501(c)(3)

Three Year Goals
* Regional conference on a yearly basis
* OS Desktop training sessions -- PrePrint workflow, photo workflow, etc. More of a classroom instruction session see about working with ProTech or something
* Tiered membership program
** associate, student, professional, etc
** provides infrastructure for tangible benefits
* Incorporate with the state
* Crossover membership with other PGH technology organizations
** In a regional sense -- connect with other Linux/BSD/Free Software Groups
** Ohio, WVULug, CPlug, BPLUG, PSLUG
** regional alliances
** (aka getting in touch with other organizations that serve a similar purpose)

One Year Goals
* getting committees functioning
* Tax ID number
* Meeting schedule defined and published 2-3 months out - resolve meeting places
* LUGRadio Live USA
* Fix the online community
** retire penguin
** install a real CMS
*** openACS is not a long term solution
*** maybe just stick with MediaWiki
** redirect wplug.org to wplug.ece.cmu.edu
** install jabber server for wplug (wildfire is a good option)
** find some network admins
** set specific times on IRC for questions/help rather than idlefest
** select a software platform
** contest for new WPLUG logo or layout
Wmoran//www.wplug.org/wiki/WPLUGBoard/Meeting-20070514WPLUGBoard/Meeting-200705142007-06-19T16:45:49Z
Wmoran: Add minutes

This special election is to fill the position of Treasurer on the WPLUG board. This new officer will serve on the WPLUG board until October 2007, the end of the current term. This is the only position we are electing for at this meeting.

The ballot for this election is available here.

There are two candidates running for the position, Michael Hansell and David Kraus. The board sent a brief questionnaire to the candidates, and their statements appear at the bottom of this page.

Ask the Candidates
There will be a special ask the candidates session in the WPLUG IRC channel (irc.freenode.net, channel #wplug) on Wendesday, June 6th, 2007 from 8-9pm EDT. We encourage all members to attend and ask questions of the candidates. There will not be an ask the candidates session at the user meeting.

These responses are exactly as received by the WPLUG board. The only changes were wiki formatting to make it preformatted text.
Automation/Controls Developer

How long Have You Been Involved With WPLUG?
I began as a list lurker in 2005, then signed on as an active member
in Aug 2006.

"Rookie Mistakes" by Beth Lynn Eicher

Linux is an incredibly powerful tool -- but that power comes at a cost.

It's frequently easy to make mistakes when deploying a Linux system
that cause system crashes, poor performance, or leave the door wide open
for those people who are less than scrupulous. What's worse, is that
while many of the mistakes are easily made by beginning Linux
administrators, they are frequently seen by advanced administrators too!

Beth Lynn Eicher will discuss some of these mistakes that are
frequently made and how you can make sure that you don't suffer the same
fate.

Business Meeting
There will be an actual business meeting at this meeting. The main purpose of the meeting will be to take nominations for a vacant board position. In general, we hope to keep everything else VERY brief.

Instead of cluttering the agenda above, I'm going to put some notes here. Relevant items can be folded into the minutes later. Feel free to add to this. Vance 14:03, 12 February 2007 (EST)

* Vice-Chair's report
** Out of brochures - discuss design and printing of new ones
** Should V-C have an inventory of brochures, business cards, CDs, stickers, etc. to mail out to folks who inquire about WPLUG?

* Program Comittee
** We could use a database of experts. I've had a couple of people ask about "So when are you going to have someone speak on Xen? I asked about that a few months ago." or "When is a python talk coming up?". These people obviously don't realize the work required to find speakers on these topics, if we had a database, that would be helpful.
** Meeting at Team-1 systems next Tuesday

* PR Committee
** Joint happy hour-like event with TiE Pittsburgh
** Survey
** Certification study group

* Newsletter Committee
** January issue out
** Three books distributed to reviewers
** Can use content for February issue

* New Business
** Organize a BarCamp event in Pittsburgh for user groups?
# Called to order at 7:41 PM. Attending: Patrick W., Vance K., Dave O., and Bill M.
# Officer Reports
## Chair's report: WPLUG is running well. The recent installfest was a success with several people attending for the first time, and the connection with the Iteration Zero folks seems to have been successufl.
## Vice Chair: We've run out of WPLUG brochures, so none could be delivered to Judi G., who volunteered to distribute them at an upcomming Sci-fi conference. Vance will research printing cost (such as the difference between full-color printing and spot-color printing) in order to get more fliers printed. Bill is to update the WPLUG wiki configuration so that .sla files can be uploaded. As Vice-chair (and the "voice of WPLUG") Vance will keep a private store of business cards and other marketing material for use as needed.
## Secretary's report: Still catching up. Dave O. and Bill M. to meet on Saturday, Feb 17th to finish tranferring and updating record-keeping materials.
## Treasurer's report: Cash amount hasn't changed. We have $467.89 in the bank account. A deposit of $45.99 from PayPal means that the PayPal account can now be closed.
# Committee Reports
## Program Committee: Tuesday, Feb 20th at 7:00 PM, WPLUG will host a site visit with Team One systems to see their High-availability technology. Team One will be providing food at the event. The next GUM is March 10th with the topic "How do I do That". Patrick may be unable to attend. Speakers and other volunteers are needed. It was noted that ballots and the membership meeting announcement must go out before the end of the week for the membership meeting coincident with the GUM.
## PR Committee: Brian S., Dave O., Beth E., and Patrick W. are hoping to attend the TiE summit to pitch WPLUG to the attendees. There is an effort to engage in a joint TiE/WPLUG happy hour event. The WPLUG survey has been posted to the Wiki for comment. Vance and Patrick will research givaways to be used to encourage survey-takers. Patrick volunteered his installation of phpsurveyor for delivery. The study group has quited since Greg S. left the area. WPLUG is still supporting the group via the Wiki, but not promoting it.
## Newsletter Committee: The January issue is out. There has been a huge response to the book review effort. Material is still needed for the February issue. Patrick suggested that it may be possible to get hardware for review in The Open Pitt.
# Unfinished Business
## Paypal account is empty. Waiting for report from Beth E. on closing. The Internet Committee needs to remove the PayPal link.
## Bill still needs to investigate a CAPTCHA plugin for Wiki PGedia.
## Vance received a copy of the WPLUG flier.
# New Business
## LugRadio Live is progressing. Effort is under way to schedule a Skype conference call to advance the project. It may be possible to partner with Google.
## Patrick is to research the possibility of WPLUG hosting a Barcamp.
"How do I do that?" - This presentation by multiple members of WPLUG will address many of the basic questions of how to do things in Linux, especially if someone is used to doing them in Windows. If you have questions about how to do something, make sure to add it to the How Do I Do That? web page. We'll go over issues on that page and select a subsection of them to present.
There will be an actual business meeting at this meeting. We have actual motions to vote on that involve changing the bylaws. All mail in ballots must be received by Friday, March 9th, 2007 at 5pm. Those wishing to vote in person may do so.
