The regular monthly meeting of the Western Pennsylvania Linux Users Group was held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 11:03 AM, at the Wilkins School Community Center, the regular presiding officer being in the chair and the Secretary being present. The minutes of the [[Meeting-20090307|March 7, 2009 meeting]] were approved as read.

The Chair reported that the effort to establish a wireless network in the Wilkins School Community Center is proceeding, and that volunteers will be sought as needed. He also gave some of the details of the community center that the Kingdom Village Community Development Corporation is establishing in Homewood. If they proceed with setting up a computer lab there, WPLUG may be able to provide assistance.

The Secretary reported that WPLUG currently has 26 members.

The Program Committee reported that the 2009 nomination meeting will be held on September 19 and the election meeting on October 31, both at the Wilkins School Community Center. It also reported that an installfest will be held on August 22, with the location to be the Wilkins School if the network has been established by then. Ideas and speakers for the May General User Meeting were solicited. It was announced that attendees might be interested in an organizing meeting for [http://hackpittsburgh.org/ hackpittsburgh.org] occurring April 5.

Mike Weychuck of [http://www.alphalab.org/ AlphaLab] introduced his organization, which is an incubator for technology start-ups on the South Side.

The meeting adjourned at 12:42 PM.

WPLUG will have a General User Meeting and presentation on Saturday, April 4th, 2009, starting at 11am at the Wilkins School Community Center.

10:30am - Doors open, setup
11:00am - Business Meeting starts
11:30am - Featured Presentation
12:30pm - Meeting ends, everyone out. We are likely to go to D's 6pack or Square Cafe for lunch.

Beth Lynn Eicher will give a talk titled "Seriously Free Software." This talk will cover

  • expanding use of Linux and other Free Software beyond its traditional core users to the broad range of people
  • how to communicate the benefits of Linux and Free Software
  • not so obvious uses of Linux soon to come
